FAQ

what to expect with acupuncture treatments

Does acupuncture hurt?

The sensations that patients experience during acupuncture range from nothing at all to a brief ache or heaviness in the area being needled. Some points are more sensitive than others. Patients describe the sensations as fleeting and often deeply relaxing.

Why would I see an acupuncturist?

Many people come for acupuncture treatment to stay healthy. Acupuncture enables the body, mind and spirit of the person to be vibrant, and stay that way in order to meet the demands of a very stressful life. Others begin acupuncture treatment to find relief from a wide range of physical conditions. However, what often begins as a concern over several symptoms often transforms into deep personal healing that reaches far beyond the physical condition. The greatest reason to begin acupuncture treatment is to recover and cultivate your awareness of the tremendous healing power of your body. Acupuncture awakens the senses and offers the possibility of deep healing of the body, mind and spirit. Many patients experience increased clarity, creativity and deeper meaning in their day-to-day lives.

How does acupuncture work?

This highly effective system of medical care is based on natural laws, which govern the movement of vital life giving energy, both in nature and in the body. This energy, called qi (pronounced chi), moves through the body in precise channels supporting functions of the body, mind and spirit. When the qi is impaired, (deficient, “stuck” or in excess) imbalance begins to surface in the form of specific symptoms. To address the underlying cause of a condition, these symptoms are viewed in relationship to the totality of a person’s health. The gentle insertion of hair thin needles at specific points along the channels of qi energy, help restore harmony at the deepest level of the body, mind, and spirit. In the presence of this subtle yet profound intervention, symptoms often resolve and patients frequently experience deep personal transformation.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

The healthcare industry recognizes acupuncture as a significant part of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.  Because of this, most policies do cover acupuncture services. We are happy to discuss insurance coverage and check to see if your policy covers our services.

Are the needles safe

Yes. Sterile disposable needles are used. They are used once and then disposed of immediately.

Are there different styles of acupuncture?

There are many styles of acupuncture. The primary distinction exists within the diagnostic process and the corresponding treatment planning process. Briefly, some styles of acupuncture treat the “branch” (or symptoms) and other styles of acupuncture treat the “root” (or causes of the symptoms). While my work is generally focused on the root of your symptoms so you can regain health for the long term, I can also help alleviate the discomforts while the root causes are addressed. To learn more about the distinction between various forms acupuncture, be sure to ask me during your first acupuncture appointment.

Do I have to be ill to benefit from acupuncture?

Absolutely not. Many patients come for regular treatments to achieve increased effectiveness and enjoyment at work and at home. Acupuncture is helpful to increase the range of responses we may have to life events, and deepen our relationships to our work, other people and our own lives. Acupuncture is also a powerful preventative measure to keep us healthy throughout the year. However, if you stop to think about it, most adults have small, seemingly insignificant discomforts (mental or physical) that keep them from enjoying their lives as fully as they used to. Acupuncture can help address these issues that you would never think to address with your physician.

How frequently do I need to come to benefit from treatment?

Of course this depends on why you are coming, your underlying health and vitality, and the duration and severity of any medical condition, should you have one. Following the initial consultation, typically you may be seen in weekly one-hour sessions for 6-8 visits. During this time, significant signs of progress will likely appear. As you experience improvement in your condition and enjoy a greater sense of ease in life, treatments may be extended to every other week, every three weeks, monthly and eventually seasonally. The frequency of treatments varies with each individual.

Is my treatment confidential?

Like any other licensed healthcare provider, I will strictly adhere to federally mandated privacy guidelines and will be happy to inform you of your privacy rights.

I want to come for treatment, what do I do next?

Contact us by phone or email. We will discuss your concerns and schedule an initial visit. During your first visit we will explore a treatment schedule that will best meet your needs.

How do I get the most out of each treatment?

Be sure to eat well before coming to treatment. Avoid caffeine in coffee, tea, or sodas during the day of treatment. Avoid intense physical activity before or after your scheduled treatment. We can also discuss specific things you can do depending on your treatment goals.

Samantha Kadrmas M.Ac, L.Ac

Samantha Kadrmas M.Ac, L.AcI began my journey in acupuncture as a patient in 2003. It seemed that everywhere I went I heard people praising the value of acupuncture and how it was positively benefiting their lives. I was curious to see how acupuncture could change my life too. I quickly found myself walking through the world with more ease and experiencing more stable emotions than ever before. My senses were opened, my immune system incredibly strong, and my wellness came from within. More About Samantha
